Digital Profile
Whatever you are marketing on-line, you are, first and foremost, marketing yourself. If people are going to buy anything from you, or take notice of your recommendations, they need to know that they can trust you. So you must demonstrate integrity and a desire to help others if you wish to be successful on-line.

When you write, you need to write about stuff that is of interest and of value to other people.  You need to be focused on the needs of others, and not just yourself. There are various avenues for you to promote yourself on-line, and it is important to be consistent in all of them, as you are forming your digital profile.

Social Networking
Social networking is an obvious way to present yourself to the world.  People will seek you out if you present yourself in a way that you are open to help others. So, communicate and be open to help other people.

There are various other web-sites that link to Facebook, which will post links onto your Profile, so that your friends can see them.  Squidoo is one of those sites, and more about that below.

Blogging
Blogging is a great way of presenting yourself. You can use them to get out useful information, and even brand yourself as an expert on a subject.  We all have areas of expertise that would be useful to others, so just think about the areas on which you have knowledge.

They are also an excellent way of indirectly promoting your web-sites.  You can place links to your web-sites within your blogs.  Then concentrate on promoting your blogs, and the links will be pointing to your web-site, which will help your placement in the search engines.

You can write your blogs on any niche that you have knowledge on. As they are on a niche subject, they will more easily rise to the top of the searches on those subjects.  Therefore they will form quality links to your web-site, which will indirectly help the search engine placement of your web-site.

There are free sites, such as Pingomatic, which enable you to get your blogs placed in search engines, and so help your web-site

Search Engine Optimisation
I am sure that you have heard of Search Engine Optimisation. However, please do not think that it is something that should just be left to experts, as you can use some of the simple techniques yourself to boost your ratings.

SEO centres on keywords.  Keywords are one of the most important tools in ranking high on search engines. To optimise your blog, decide your main keywords, and write the wording of your blog around those keywords.  They will then get picked up by the search engines.  For the best results you need to research your keywords, the best being Wordtracker, but they do charge for the service, but they give you a free trial period for  7 days.

However, do not abuse them, or you will suffer the consequences. Many novices read about places to add keywords, such as ALT tags, anchors and other areas. While these are meant to be used if you want to help boost your keywords, they should be relevant to the image or the place where you are linking. Many people try to stuff keywords into every possible place. There is no benefit whatsoever in doing this.

Just keep it simple. As a general rule, optimise one page with 3 keywords or phrases. I would recommend starting with one or two. Depending on whom you talk to, your percentage of keywords in your text should be between three and five percent of the total content on the site.  There are some free online tools that can tell you the percentage of each word on your site. The Google Rankings Tool  gives you the facility of entering  the domain or URL of your website to see which are the words and phrases it uses most, and gives you  a detailed report on their numbers and density

One huge mistake is to repeat keywords in the keyword tag. Here is an example: gloves, brown gloves, blue gloves, and red gloves. There are two things wrong here,  Firstly,  the use of the word “and” is unnecessary. This is called a stop word, and search engines ignore this type of word. Some common stop words are “and” “the” “because” “this”  “that” “there”   The second thing wrong with the keywords is the multiple  repetition of the word “gloves”.  The corrected keywords should read; shoes, brown, blue, red. The search engine will know you are offering gloves and will match the colour with the word glove. Repeating “gloves” will penalise your site.

One final tip on using keywords. Make sure you use your top keywords in the TITLE of your site as well as in the description tag. Do not load the title with keywords. These are the first places the engines will scan. Your description tag is usual what is displayed on search engines when relevant keywords are typed in. So, be sure they are there. Do not just type in key word phrases. No one will know what your site is about. What is the point of coming up in rank if no one understand the description.

Squidoo
Squidoo is completely free. In fact, they pay you for making free web-pages, or lenses as they are called on Squidoo.

The beauty of Squidoo is that the web-pages are designed for search engine optimisation. They allow you to add up to 40 keywords, which are called tags on Squidoo

You can add as many Text modules as you want, which show up as separate pages in search engines. Each module has a Title, which is designed to be attractive to search engines.

You can add links to other sites and blogs on your Squidoo lenses, which enables you to use your Squidoo lenses to improve the rankings of those web-sites and blogs.  You can have hundreds of Squidoo lenses, all pointing to your web-sites and blogs.

They are very easy to make and it is an enjoyable way of promoting improving the ranking of your other sites.

Squidoo has links to Facebook, so that you can log in and post excerpts of your Squidoo lenses to your Profile, to be viewed to your friends.  It also links to Twitter and social bookmarking sites such as Stumble It
Why don't you give Squidoo It won't cost you a penny.
